Here are a few more photos from the workshop on Matiu/Somes Island, Wellington Harbour, this time from the Nikon D600.

This is the first time I (James Gilberd) have co-tutored a photo workshop with Richard Young (of New Zealand Photography Workshops), and the first time either of us has run a workshop on this historic island in the middle of Wellington Harbour.

We advertised the workshop in the Wellington Photography Meetup Group which provided a good bunch of keen photographers who were also both tough and philosophical enough to put up with the late autumn weather on the island. Actually, it wasn't that bad (although, personally, I could've done without the "dawn" shoot on Sunday). From what we could see, Wellington City was copping worse weather than we were, despite our exposed location. The ferry trip over was smooth and the Saturday afternoon conditions pleasant, while Sunday was less ideal but still good for photography. Perhaps the most memorable scene was something we couldn't photograph (without IR/night vision equipment) - the procession of little blue penguins coming ashore in the dark after their day's fishing in the harbour.

It's fair to say that Richard is more of a landscape photographer than I am, and so I learned quite a bit about how he does things and approaches his photography a little differently to the way I do. But we were basically on the same page and everyone enjoyed the workshop.

This is a good place to thank my wife, artist Denise Durkin, who prepared the meals we all enjoyed on the island and generally helped look after stuff.

We expect to run this workshop again in future, but it's difficult to book a DOC house on the island in the warmer months as the demand is high. Still, if you can put up with cooler conditions, the photographic opportunities make it worthwhile.

I took two cameras along, the old Nikon D40 as a spare in case anyone else's camera died, but that didn't happen so I used it myself. I also took my 'work' camera, a D600, which I use for much of my commercial photography at Photospace and Courtenay Studios. Next time I might leave it behind and take a film camera, 35mm or a medium format.

I haven't edited the D600 photos yet but here's a selection from the old D40.

Well, the weather wasn't so pleasant as we've had for the 4 previous walks, and the light not as good, so it made for more of a photographic challenge. My poor old Nikon D40 struggled a bit with the low light, but it did OK (see below). Even on a slightly blustery night, there are photos to be had.

If you want to join this Meetup group, it's free, and it has many free-to-attend events. It's a good excuse to get out and do some photography and meet others who're keen on doing same.

Some of you might be interested in the current exhibitions by Thomas Slade at Photospace Gallery, 37 Courtenay Place. One set of photos (the environmental portraits and landscapes from the towns of Waverley and Shannon) was shot on 8"x10" film, scanned and printed up to 100 x 80cm. The other set was shot digitally, on a Canon 5D-MkIV at 50 MP. These photos, taken last year around Wellington might be familiar to some of you who are in them, as Thomas advertised in this Meetup group for extras to be in his directed photos. Remember the bus, parked in Tory St?

Well, haven't we been lucky with the weather? This is the 4th photo walk the Wellington Photography Meetup group has run this summer and we've struck beautiful conditions each time. Given the calibre of this summer, that's a gift!
Thanks to Rob and the team at the Wellington Photographic Supplies Featherston St store for letting us meet there this evening, and for the generous offer of a free 6"x8" print of your best photo taken on this evening's walk.

If you're coming across this and wondering about the Meetup group, it's free to join, most of the listed events are free (though both Richard Young and myself - James Gilberd - offer workshops and photography courses that you have to pay for) and it's fast becoming a really good social group. This photo walk was the best-attended so far, and we have a drink at a handy pub afterwards, which has been working well.

It was nice to see you all again, and quite a few new people too, so it's all going in the right direction. The weather might become a bit iffy for planned outdoor shoots so we'll figure out what to do next. Maybe attempt one more photo walk soon and try to ride our weather luck?

BTW, a few people were asking me about Photospace Gallery. I've been running the gallery at 37 Courtenay Place for the last 18+ years, and we currently have an excellent exhibition by Chris Corson-Scott (running till this Saturday - come and see if you want to check out very large prints made from drum-scans of 8" x 10" negatives.

Here are some of my pics from this evening. I had fun using my old, fairly limited Nikon D40 with its standard zoom, but it did a surprisingly good job. The night shot of the Tory St demolition site was four attempts of 30 seconds each at full stretch, trying hold the camera still on top of the 2m high fence and hoping no one came by and poked me in the ribs or something, making me let go of the camera.

This evening, I co-hosted a photo walk with Richard Young, for members of the Wellington Photography Meetup Group. We met at Vivian St Wellington Photographic Supplies and meandered in the general direction of Cuba St, then up Cuba to meet at the Southern Cross bar. The weather was luckily fine and sunny. As with the other recent walks, this one was sociable, relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you all for joining in. Hope you took some nice pics.

BTW, I talked to a few people about running some short workshops on learning how to control your camera. Basically, you shouldn't really be giving any of the creative decisions to your camera. You should be doing all the creative thinking and then making the camera record the photo in the way you want it to. If interested, please email me. The workshop will be along these lines.

On the subject of workshops, Richard Young and I are doing this Matiu-Somes Island on in March. Places limited.

We'll be co-hosting another photo walk in late Feb, probably meeting at the Featherston St Wellington Photo Supplies and looking at the waterfront/business end of town. We'll announce that one soon on Meetup.

This evening, I co-hosted a photo walk with Richard Young, for members of the Wellington Photography Meetup Group. The weather started off pretty rough today, and in the morning I was pessimistic, thinking the walk might have to be reduced to being from Wellington Photographic Supplies on Vivian St to the bar 100m away in Pirie St. But the sun came out and the high, thin cloud made for perfect photographic light. Later, the wind dropped and the cloud disapperaed altogether, By that time, though, we were heading into The Hop Garden (actually a separate Meetup event).

This walk was better-attended than the one a fortnight ago, which is a good sign for the group. It was sociable, relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you all for joining in.

Note; these photos, as you can see, are just 'straight'. They're edited (selected) in Lightroom then just tweaked for exposure, and given minor cropping and straightening. I'm personally not a fan of digital filter effects.

Last Thursday, December 1st 2016, I co-hosted a photo walk with Richard Young, for members of the Wellington Photography Meetup Group. We left from Wellington Photographic Supplies store on Vivian St, strolled up and around Tory St then spread out over the new Pukeahu National War Memorial Park at the base of Mt Cook. As you can see, Wellington turned on perfect conditions for the event and it was most pleasant, relaxing and sociable.
